I have seasons where I feel like I am on top of the world, and all is swell. Then I experience seasons where I feel lost, confused, and fearful. I get stuck in a mind loop of the I don’t know and I’m unsure’s—I don’t know what I am doing, I don’t know what I should be doing, and I don’t know who I am. These thoughts can be so overpowering, eventually overruling my system. I start to believe internally and feel like I am a big case of I don’t know.
Amid figuring these very confusing thoughts out, I came across a Jay Shetty podcast reel where he shared, “you become what you think about.”
…oh my. You do become what you think about, and I’ve been thinking about everything I don’t want to become…oh my.
No wonder I felt lost, confused, and fearful! All I could think about was not knowing myself like I was trying to convince myself that I didn’t know who I was. I was thinking my thoughts into existence, and these were thoughts I did not want to become.
If you are thinking limiting thoughts,
stop now and transform your mind with me. I believe thinking about who you want to become is a continuous journey. There is no end destination. And our seasons of life come and go; we will have seasons where we feel like we’re on top of the world and seasons where life may feel a little overwhelming. The goal is not to reach a point where we’re on top of the world all the time because that’s simply not realistic. You’re not immune to the external pains and sufferings of life. The goal is to discover your power sentence (revise it, if needed), live by it, and become it. You want to become someone so sure of yourself that no season of life can diminish your belief in yourself.
What is a power sentence?
What is a power sentence? According to Brooke Castillo, the founder of The Life Coach School and host of The Life Coach School Podcast, your power sentence is the one that is running your life right now. And this sentence is NOT the sentence you regularly tell yourself but is the sentence that drives how you move through life.
For example, I regularly tell myself that I can. But the sentence that governs the way I move through life, overcome road bumps, and tackle limiting beliefs is what if I fail.
What if I fail to become the person I want to become? What if I fail to give my future self the life she deserves? What if I fail to meet my expectations and fulfill my purpose? What if, what if, what if…
Before we move on to the solution, let’s figure out your power sentence first. What is the sentence that governs the way you move through life? Remember, it is not the sentence you tell yourself. Telling and believing are two very different things.
It may help to ask yourself:
When presented with fear, do I feel engrossed or empowered by it? Does fear keep me in the same place or propel me forward? When presented with seasons of vagueness, do I question myself or stand my ground?
If you do not want to live by your current power sentence, change it!

First, pick a new power sentence. (If you need some more time, no worries. I am still trying to figure out mine. Never rush the formation of something great.)
Second, think and believe it. Allow the new power sentence to run your life. Let it drive your reason, motivation, and actions. Your new power sentence needs to empower you. For me, what if I fail is no longer in my thought vocabulary. I will not allow it to hinder my growth and limit my belief in myself. My new power sentence will support my journey, fuel my confidence, and slap fear across the face. *cue middle fing-
Third, become it. As discussed, you become what you think about, so choose your thoughts wisely. Why waste time thinking about what you can’t do and can’t be? You do not have the space, the time, or the energy to think about things that don’t align with you. Redirect your thoughts towards a path of knowing and certainty. Think about how cool it’d be to experience what it’s like to become the person you think into existence. Our mind is our most powerful asset, and it creates our reality and controls who we become.

Practices To Practice
Beyond thinking, I’ve been actively journaling my thoughts and that has been incredibly affirming. Journaling helps me assemble and understand my thoughts through compartmentalization and visualization. Here’s a sample of a journal entry:
I want to be the woman I’m destined to be. And this woman inspires other women too. She is free and generous. She is a helper and a contributor. She is resilient and relentless. She only thinks in limitless beliefs.
I know who I am. I know what I want to do.
[repeat this every day]
On top of that, I created a notion page dedicated to self-discovery called Who Is Elizabeth Chu. The page is to collect the thoughts, ideas, and experiences that reinforce my knowing sense of self. I plan on making a lot of changes in the way I think, speak, and act, so I need a vast place where I can thought dump and audit.
I am dedicated and invested in becoming my new power sentence. Your girl has too many things she wants to achieve and seasons of life to enjoy! She does not have time for limiting power sentences and you don’t too.
